About SkeletonCheck

SkeletonCheck is a free self-test that estimates your bone structure type from a full-body photo. It uses the three types of the Japanese styling method kokkaku shindan (literally "skeleton diagnosis"): Straight, Wave and Natural. Your photo is processed inside your browser and is never sent to a server. No sign-up is needed.

A stylist judges these types by looking at the body in three dimensions: its depth, the size of the joints, and where muscle and fat sit. Seeing your own body objectively is surprisingly hard, so self-assessments vary a lot from person to person. This tool measures proportions it can read from a photo, such as the ratio of shoulder width to hip width, the length of the neck and the proportions of the legs, and shows them as numbers you can compare.

The three types

The commonly described traits of each type, and what the test looks at in your photo.

TypeCommonly described traitsWhat the photo test looks at
Straight A full, three-dimensional upper body. The neck tends to be shorter and the collarbones and shoulder bones less visible Width around the shoulders, neck length, balance of the upper and lower body
Wave A slimmer, flatter upper body with a lower center of gravity. The neck tends to be longer Shoulder-to-hip ratio, neck length, proportions of the upper and lower body
Natural A visible bone frame, with prominent joints and a sturdy look to the shoulders, hands and feet How far the shoulders stick out, limb proportions, overall frame

Kibbe body types are a different system with more categories. SkeletonCheck uses only the three Japanese types.

How to use it

  1. Pick a full-body photo taken from the front while standing straight
  2. Load it on this page (the photo stays on your device)
  3. Answer a short self-check about your hands, skin and build, which helps when clothes hide your body lines
  4. See the result, which combines the photo measurements with your answers

Tips for the photo

Limits of this test

A photo only shows a flat outline. The depth of the body, which matters a lot for these types, can't be read directly from a front photo, so a photo alone has limits. That is why the test also asks the self-check questions. Treat the result as a tendency, not a verdict. It can help you choose clothes, but it is not a medical or professional assessment.

FAQ

Is my photo saved anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser and the photo is never sent to a server. When you close the page, the image is gone.

Can I use a photo in loose clothes?

Yes, but the result will be less accurate. Clothes that hide your body lines leave less outline to measure, so a photo where your shape is visible gives a steadier result.

The result doesn't match what I thought I was

The three types don't split people cleanly, and many people have traits of more than one. If the photo and the self-check disagree, you probably show both tendencies. Trying the clothes on is the surest check.

Is it free?

Your type, how strongly it shows and the measurement that counted most are free, with no sign-up or login. The type each of the remaining measurements points to is a one-time purchase of $6.99. After you buy, you can run the test again in the same browser without paying again.
